Good Sweet Earth FAQ

  • What makes organic lawn care different from traditional chemical lawn care?

Organic lawn care focuses on feeding the soil instead of forcing quick growth. Chemical fertilizers can pollute waterways, sterilize soil and harm pollinators, while organic treatments—like plant-based fertilizers and compost tea—build living, healthy soil that supports strong grass and safe habitats for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. It’s a cleaner, more sustainable way to care for your lawn.

  • Can organic lawn care control weeds?

Yes. Organic lawn care keeps weeds in check by improving soil biology and growing thicker, stronger turf. Healthy soil and deep-rooted grass crowd out weeds without the need for harsh weed killers that can harm pollinators and soil life. It’s a slower, natural process that creates balance instead of chemical dependency. That being said, some biodiversity is actually healthy, and when you are trying to grow a healthy, natural lawn, you should never aim for a monoculture. Organic weed control is about working with nature, not destroying it with chemicals.

  • Is organic lawn care more expensive than traditional lawn service?

Not in the long run. Organic lawn care costs are similar to chemical programs but come with bigger long-term benefits: healthier soil, fewer weeds and a lawn that supports pollinators instead of endangering them. You’ll save money over time because natural soil systems need fewer inputs and less maintenance and can survive drought conditions much better than over-chemicaled lawns. Plus, since we’re a non-profit organization, we are always seeking ways to bring our costs down through grants, sponsorships and donations.

  • Why is Good Sweet Earth a nonprofit lawn care company?

Good Sweet Earth is a nonprofit because we believe healthy lawns and a healthy planet go hand in hand. Our focus is on environmental sustainability, climate action and growing natural lawns that protect pollinators and local ecosystems. By improving soil health and reducing chemical use, we help protect West Michigan’s waterways, wildlife and climate. As a nonprofit, our goal isn’t bringing in dollars—it’s creating greener, more sustainable communities through organic lawn care and education. We aim to be more transformational and less transactional.

  • What are the benefits of hiring a nonprofit for lawn care?

When you hire a nonprofit lawn care company, your dollars do more than give you greener grass for a few months— they support community programs that protect pollinators, improve West Michigan soil and water, and transform communities. Your lawn becomes part of a environmental solution, not a source of global pollution.

  • How long before I see results from organic lawn treatments?

Some lawns show early signs of improvement in just a few weeks—deeper color, stronger growth— but the biggest benefits come with time. As soil microbes thrive, turf thickens and chemical residues fade, your yard becomes a living ecosystem that supports pollinators, soil organisms and long-term health for your landscape. Think of organic lawn care in the same way you think of improving your own health: eating right, exercising, getting good sleep— everyone will see results in different ways and at different times. It’s the same way with getting your lawn in shape; in some lawns, improvements show up almost immediately, and for other yards it can take several months, or even a year, to see real change. Chemical lawn treatments have given us the illusion of instant results; nature doesn’t work instantly.
