About swamp milkweed

A native perennial growing 3'–6', with fragrant deep-pink flower clusters in summer and 5" seed pods in fall. It's the larval host for monarch and queen butterflies, the only plant their caterpillars can eat. Also draws bumblebees, honeybees, tiger swallowtails, hummingbirds and more.

Growing details

Light: Full sun, part sun

Mature plant height: 3'–6' (can be kept smaller when planted in a container and by pruning)

Bloom time: June–August

Bloom color: Pink, lilac

Soil moisture: Damp to wet

Soil type: Acid, neutral, rich, average, clay

Spacing: 1'–3' on center

Native to Michigan, it adapts well beyond wet habitats and tolerates dry spells, heavy clay and most soil types once established. Good for rain gardens and pond edges. The roots run deep — plant it where you want it to stay. Expect a few seasons before it's really showy; spacing plants at 1' gives a fuller look sooner.

Companion plants

Damp-to-wet conditions: white turtlehead, common boneset, Joe-Pye weed, soft rush, great blue lobelia, blue vervain. Drier conditions: purple coneflower, rattlesnake master, smooth oxeye.
